Highlights of Central Plan 1999-2000

 RURAL DEVELOPMENT
(I) RURAL EMPLOYMENT AND POVERTY
     ALLEVIATION (Rs. 6900 Crore)

1. Employment Assurance Scheme (Rs. 1700 crore).
1700      crore rupees for providing assured unskilled
              wage employment of 100 days to those seeking
              such employment in the lean agricultural season
              in all the rural blocks in the country.
2. Indira Awas Yojana (Rs. 1710 crore).
13          lakh houses to be built for the rural poor.
3. Integrated Rural Development Programme including Rural Artisans
(Rs. 859 crore).

20,000   Rupees per family invesment and a credit mobilisation of Rs.3400 crore is targeted.
(II) RURAL DEVELOPMENT (Rs.2750 crore)
1.Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme(Rs.1800 crore)

1,00,000 habitations will be provided safe drinking water by March 2000.
2. National Social Assistance Programme (Rs.725 crore)
51.89       lakhs old persons to be covered by National Old Age Pension Scheme.
1.83         lakhs household of deceased to be benefited under National Family Benefit Scheme.
14.60       lakhs expectant mothers to be benefited under National Maternity Benfit Scheme.
3. Rural Sanitation (Rs.110 crore)
10            lakhs sanitary toilets to be provided to individual household below poverty line.
AGRICULTURE
229          crore rupees provided for National Watershed
                Development Programme for Rainfed Agriculture.
25            crore rupees provided for Development of Information Technology in Agriculture.
215          crore rupees provided for expanding coverage under Comprehensive Crop           
                Insurance Scheme
COAL AND LIGNITE
299.80     million tonnes of coal production targeted.
17.50       million tonnes of lignite production targeted.
EDUCATION
160          crore rupees provided for free education for girls.
1031        crore rupees provided for Nutritional support to Primary Education.
750          crore rupees provided for District Primary Educaion Project.
110          crore rupees provided or adult education.
400          crore rupees provided for Operation Black Board.
350          crore rupees provided for Non-formal Education.
219          crore rupees provided for Teacher Training Programmes.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
50            crore rupees provided for the development and promotion of Information
                 Technology.
HEALH
250           crore rupees provided for National Malaria Eradication Programme including
                 Kala-azar.
85            crore rupees povided for National Leprosy Eradication Programme.
140          crore rupees or AIDS Control Programme.
105          crore rupees for National Tuberculosis Control Programme.
85            crore rupees provided for National Trachoma and Blindness Control Programme.
POSTS
1000        PC based machines for counter computerisation including 100 SB LANs to be
                supplied.
60            post offices to be modernised.
60            Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs) to be insalled.
55           customer care centres to be computerised.
PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS
6128.29  crore rupees provided for exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas.
5656.27  crore rupees provided for refining and marketing of petroleum products.
POWER
4363.4    MW addition to installed capacity.
469        billion units generation targeted.
2000       villages to be energised.
2.5          lakh pump sets to be energised.
RAILWAYS
18750     Wagons, 2159 coaches, 263 locomotives and 250 EMUs/Metro to be added.
2550        kilometers track renewal.
500         route kilometres of electrification.
541         route kilometres of gauge conversion.
SMALL SCALE INDUSTRIES
173        crore rupees for Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana, to assist 2.20 lakh educated
              unemployed youth.
140        crore rupees for Rural Employment Generation programme.
SPORTS
106.66   crore rupees provided for sports.
STEEL
15.43     million tonnes of saleable steel targeted.
TELECOMMUNICATIONS
             To instal
45.50   lakh direct exchange lines (including 4.9 lakh lines by MTNL).
54.70   lakh lines of switching capacity (including 5.7 lakh lines by MTNL).
4.0       lakh lines of trunk automatic exchange capacity.
45        thousand village public phones.
WASTELAND DEVELOPMENT
1,36,750 hectares area to be developed under integrated Wateland Development Project
            scheme.
SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EMPOWERMENT
135      crore rupees provided for Post Matric Scholarships for SC/ST students by which
           about 22 lakhs students are likely to be benefited during 1999-2000.
437     crore rupees provided towards Special Central Assistance for Scheduled Castes
           Component Plan by which about 25 lakh Scheduled Caste families are likely to be
           benefited during 1999-2000.
